POSITION: Preschool and Childcare Director

QUALIFICATIONS:   Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Master’s Degree preferred.     Ohio Department of Education & Workforce (ODEW) license required. Acceptable licensure types may include the following: Valid administrator educator license or valid principal license for grades pre-kindergarten through grade six and completion of at least four courses in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college, university, or technical college OR valid intervention specialist license or education of the handicapped certificate with an endorsement in pre-kindergarten special needs or early education of the handicapped OR valid pre-kindergarten certificate or endorsement or an early childhood license with an endorsement in pre-kindergarten special needs or early education of the handicapped OR valid early childhood intervention specialist license OR comparable certification or license may be accepted. Demonstrated experience leading teams. Experience in education, preferably early childhood education or special education. Experience with budgetary processes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, time management, organizational and critical thinking skills and the ability to process and disseminate complicated information. Ability to model the agency’s values and code of conduct. Successful completion of a physical, BCI/FBI background check and multiple database background checks as required by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. Must be physically capable to lift, carry and move children in a safe manner.

DUTIES:  General duties include, but are not limited to:

Shelby Hills Preschool

  • Oversees the Preschool Program, including all compliance with federal, state and local rules and regulations. Responsible for oversight of staff scheduling, supervision, hiring, training and discipline according to SCBDD policies and procedures.
  • Ensures licensure compliance, meeting the Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) Standards.
  • Supervises Shelby Hills Preschool staff per the Table of Organization.
  • Oversees the departmental budget for the Preschool Department, in conjunction with the Finance and Operations Director and Superintendent.
  • Oversees and ensures procedures are followed for student enrollment including: transition to kindergarten, screenings, coordinates evaluation team reports, coordinates individual education programs and classroom assignments.
  • Ensures adequate staffing levels for preschool by monitoring caseloads, classroom sizes and needs.
  • Responsible for ensuring all school calendars meet the needs of the programs and the various districts.
  • Responsible for determining and calling delays and cancellations for the Shelby Hills Preschool main center with consultation from the Superintendent as needed.
  • Serves on the Leadership team and other Board committees as assigned by Superintendent.
  • Liaison to the Shelby County school districts. Liaison to community agencies serving preschool age students.
  • Responsible for problem solving for situations not resolved through other means; coordinates steps of Due Process when necessary. 
  • Links parents to services via referral to the Service and Support Administration (SSA) Department. 
  • Act as a Special Education resource for teachers and specialists. 
  • Coordinates summer programs for preschool and childcare.
  • Provides back-up to the Preschool Supervisor for day-to-day classroom issues/classroom observations, classroom planning/teaming. 
  • Advises on curriculum development as it relates to the Early Learning and Development Standards. 
  • Ensures regular staff meetings with Preschool staff and Childcare staff.
  • Oversees typical student program procedures including enrollment, classroom assignment and tuition.
  • Coordinates with the Communications Specialist for marketing and social media posts.
  • Develops in-service training opportunities. 
  • Reviews all Student Incident Reports and provides updates to the Superintendent as needed.
  • Responsible for compliance with school safety programs, including fire, tornado or active threat. Responsible to ensure school safety programs are completed with satellite districts.
  • In the absence of a school district representative, is authorized to act as the district representative, as per the interagency agreement.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Wilma Valentine Childcare

  • Responsible for the administration of the Wilma Valentine Childcare program, including supervision of staff according to the SCBDD table of organization and direction of all day-to-day activities, including following all policies and procedures. 
  • Directs the hiring and training and development of Childcare Assistants in conjunction with the SCBDD Human Resources Director.
  • Responsible for tracking and renewing all required childcare certifications and training for employees.
  • Works with the Wilma Valentine Childcare Board and ensures compliance of policies, procedures, and financial sustainability. Recommends changes as necessary to the SCBDD and to the Wilma Valentine Board.
  • Uses community connections and availability of resources to ensure the financial stability of Wilma Valentine Childcare, including grants and fundraisers.
  • Works with the SCBDD Superintendent and other staff to ensure that specialized supports exist to serve children with disabilities in childcare.
  • Advises other childcare providers on resources available to support children with disabilities to increase community capacity for childcare.
  • Responsible to ensure tornado drills and other safety drills are conducted in Wilma Valentine Childcare.
  • Ensures licensure compliance in meeting Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) licensing rules.
  • Responsible for communicating any cancellations, delays for the program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION:  Pay starting at $84,620 or more based on relevant experience. Benefits include State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS); medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance; paid sick, vacation & personal leave. Eleven paid federal holidays & extended holiday periods in December and July.

HOURS:     12 month position working 40 hours per week (250 days).
