It is November and that means for many of us, it’s a time to reflect on what we are grateful for in our lives. In my work life, I’m certainly grateful for the role I’m privileged to play as the leader of an amazing organization, the Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Not only am I surrounded by some of the most dedicated and compassionate employees on a regular basis, but I have the opportunity to interact with and be a part of the lives of many of the people we serve.
Looking back on this year, most of the bright spots in my professional life came when I was at an activity with people that receive services from SCBDD. My son and I played in a Special Olympics softball game. I got to greet trick or treaters at our annual Trunk or Treat where we had over 200 ghosts, goblins and witches. I even got to be on a Youtube channel with a young man who likes to review movies.
I realize that many people don’t have the luxury of loving their jobs, but I lucked out by landing this one. All jobs have their challenges and days that aren’t the best, even mine, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
I started my career in Fairborn, Ohio working in the home of four women with disabilities. I was a Direct Support Professional and provided care and support to the ladies that lived there. I’m grateful for that experience, and all of the other ones that led me to the job I have now.
