If you’ve ever driven by the Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities (SCBDD) on a sunny summer day and thought things might be quiet inside—you’d be surprised!

While Shelby Hills Preschool is the only program that takes a break during the summer, the rest of the SCBDD team stays busy year-round. And even in preschool, when studentsaren’t in the classroom, preschool administrators, facilities staff, and support personnel are hard at work preparing for the upcoming school year.

Meanwhile, our other child-focused programs—Wilma Valentine Childcare and Early Intervention—continue full steam ahead. Summer doesn’t slow these teams down one bit.In fact, this season is often just as busy as the rest of the year!

Over at the other building, our Service and Support Administration (SSA) team remains active all summer long. These staff members work with individuals as young as three, all the way through adulthood, helping coordinate services like housing, personal care, and daily support needs. One exciting summer partnership that has developed in recent years is with the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA, where SCBDD helps support an inclusive daycamp experience for children receiving services.

Our Community Education and Outreach team also keeps things lively, organizing outdoor activities, coordinating involvement at the Shelby County Fair, and running the Summer Work Experience program for teens and young adults.

There’s no such thing as a “slow season” at SCBDD! To stay updated on what we’re doing in the community, be sure to follow us on social media. And if you have questions about services or supports, we’re just a phone call away at 937-497-8155.
