As children are heading back to school and summer starts drawing to a close, we thought it may be a good time to reminisce about everything that the Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities accomplished this summer.
As most of the community knows, SCBDD provides special education preschool services for Shelby County schools, but we also provide many other valuable programs and opportunities for people with disabilities all year long, keeping us busy even in the summer months.
In Early Intervention, our employees sponsored several playdates in the community and capped the summer off with a day at the Sidney pool for eligible families. Early Intervention is a free service for babies and children who are experiencing developmental delays. We have specialized staff and licensed therapists who provide intervention in the family home to assist babies and children with meeting milestones. This program operates year-round.
In our Community and Education Department, we had another successful year of youth career exploration. Students visited a variety of job sites, learned about careers locally and had the opportunity to try different jobs to prepare them to be a part of the workforce. The department continued to sponsor recreational activities like pickleball, open mic night and bingo all summer long.
And we can’t forget our dedicated service and support administrators. They continued their work with over 470 individuals and their families. Our SSAs coordinate services and assist with local resources and supports, like housing, benefits and Social Security.
