Assistive Technology Enhances The Learning Experience

Assistive Technology

Various forms of Assistive Technology are available to enhance the learning experience for individuals with disabilities. The staff at Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities are always looking for new ways to implement technology into individuals’ daily activities. Ryan is 4-years old and is in Miss Emma & Miss Joan’s class at Shelby Hills Early Childhood. Ryan has a visual impairment that limits clear vision to approximately 12 inches. To allow him to see and participate fully in activities with his peers, an app called TeamViewer is being used along with an iPad. This app puts the activities being displayed on the classroom Smartboard within his viewing range and gives him the ability to interact with the activities. Maria Poeppelman, Speech Language Pathologist said, “He is talking so much more and interacting with the activities. He cannot wait for his turn!” There are a host of free lending libraries for assistive technology in Ohio, many of which ship for free.
